For those who have been facilitators before, we encourage you to share past experiences with EKT parent/family engagement. What worked well? There will be opportunities to connect, create and work on agendas for your parent group meetings. Experienced EKT parent group facilitators are present to share their experiences, activities that have worked well, answer any questions and support your work. You are registering to attend the EKT Parent Group Facilitator Training held on Thursday, July 7, 2022 10:00 AM-12:30 PM at Ventura Park Elementary School | Cafeteria. Experienced Facilitators supporting this workshop: Jacqui McDougal “aka” Ms. Jacqui started this Prenatal to 3rd grade(P-3) program journey 5 years ago. With a degree in criminal justice and psychology, teaching students and caregivers was not something she envisioned but she hoped to support the youth by being a juvenile probation officer. She left her desk job to work as an Instructional Assistant at Ventura Park where her daughter just began kindergarten. Working where her daughter attends school allowed this single mother to pick up and drop her off each day, watch the building of relationships, and support firsthand the academic growth of her child. It was through this experience that she found a newly discovered passion to support young students. After implementing and teaching Ventura’s first Beyond MLK class her former SUN site manager recommended she apply for the P3 position at Ventura Park. Jacqui was able to stay at Ventura Park to strengthen the relationships she had already established with families in the BIPOC community in hopes of bridging the gap between caregivers and school staff. Jacqui was the first P3 coordinator and the First African American P3 Coordinator hired to participate in what started as a pilot program. She is now 5 years in and has created and established many school programs, built relationships with community partners, hosted culturally specific dinners, and created culturally specific play and learn groups. She was honored with the Prestigious Ye’lena Lima award and many other personal awards from her school district and school community. Utica Abdullah: Native to the islands of The Bahamas, Utica Abdullah has manifested herself as a leader in her community and a role model for all women alike. After graduating high school, Utica traveled abroad to attend college in the United States. Thriving as a scholar student-athlete, Utica became well-versed at being both competitive and disciplined in all endeavors that she pursued. After obtaining multiple degrees from Portland State University, Utica was inspired to solidify her own roots here in Oregon. Utica married her college sweetheart, Jamal, and, together, they have four beautiful girls. With experiences from her own family life, Utica found motivation to help other families in her community with an opportunity to work for IRCO, as a Prenatal to Third Grade (P-3) Program Coordinator. With this role, Utica has continued to demonstrate qualities of being process-oriented, inclusive, purposeful and ethical.
