Description

This workshop will engage participants in hands-on processing techniques used to dry seaweed and fillet salmon for consumption. Alaska Native Indigenous Training Academy will host a SOS (Successes of Summer) Seaweed and Salmon workshop at Daybreak Star on June 3-5, 2022. This session will focus on the demonstration of techniques used in Alaska for drying and preserving seaweed, and will allow participants to engage in hands-on cutting and preparation of fish to identify the proper storage and preservation by smoking, drying, cooking and roasting salmon. Each registrant will receive seaweed to dry and process and will work with others to preserve salmon. The drying of seaweed and fish processing is done outdoors, so participants must be prepared and dressed for weather. Ideally, the weather is best for drying seaweed when the sun is out and temperatures are higher (70's+ is great) can dry the seaweed quicker, alternatively, salmon require cool temperatures for storage until they are properly preserved--this will take attention to detailed instructions and time-management. In some instances weather is wet and prohibits opportunity to dry seaweed, so alternate plans are made and used to save for future use The time consuming work involved in processing seaweed and salmon is also therapeutic, and during the workshop there is ample time to participate in other activities nearby that are associated with the SOS workshop that promote wellness, and healthy food choices.
