"This building thrives as a teaching tool not just because of how it was built, but because of how it is used." -Keith David Reeves, Senior Instructional Technology Coordinator, Discovery Elementary School
Discovery Elementary School offers many lessons and much inspiration for schools looking to use their buildings as teaching tools. Its building design features and concepts can be applied, at some scale, to any school - new or existing, large or small.
Discovery Elementary was the first net-zero energy school in Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic region. They are a U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School and a National Wildlife Federation Eco-Schools USA Green Flag School. They are deeply committed to research-based child development practices, and to the principles and best practices of standards-based instruction and assessment in a healthy, environmentally-conscious public school setting.
Green Schools National Network (GSNN)’s mission is to shape healthy, equitable, and sustainable schools where children thrive and learn to steward the environments and communities they call home. Since 2007, GSNN has used a holistic approach in its work with schools, districts, organizations, and individual educators to transform schools from good to green. GSNN’s work is informed by its GreenPrint, a framework for transformation that covers best practices in leadership, curriculum and instruction, culture and climate, and facilities and operations.
