Description

Join architect and designer Nina Cooke John for a fun and engaging tile-making workshop for the Harriet Tubman Monument Slated for installation in the Fall of 2022, Mayor Ras Baraka and the City of Newark commissioned architect Nina Cooke John to design and build a new Harriet Tubman monument in the newly renamed Tubman Square (former Washington Park). The monument will honor the legacy of Harriet Tubman, the Underground Railroad, and the long fight for liberation. On June 2, 2022, from 6-8pm Nina Cooke John and her team invite children, families and staff at Harriet Tubman Elementary School to contribute to the making of the monument, through a hands-on tile making workshops. Participants will be guided on the tile-making process and asked to etch their designs onto wet clay. The mosaic tiles from these workshops will be incorporated into the monument’s wall surfaces and will become a part of history. This will not be a static statue of a woman but a dynamic multi-sensory space that encourages engagement, reflection, and learning. We hope you will join us and be a part of the historical and timely monument.
