Auggie is an ordinary boy with an extraordinary face - and heart! We'll be reading the NYT Bestseller Wonder, by R.J. Palacio! After we talk about the book, we'll be watching the movie, and then discussing how the book and the movie are similar and different. I won't describe what I look like. Whatever you're thinking, it's probably worse. August Pullman was born with a facial difference that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a mainstream school. Starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep, he wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid—but his new classmates can’t get past Auggie’s extraordinary face. Beginning from Auggie’s point of view and expanding to include his classmates, his sister, her boyfriend, and others, the perspectives converge to form a portrait of one community’s struggle with empathy, compassion, and acceptance. In a world where bullying among young people is an epidemic, this is a refreshing new narrative full of heart and hope. Please have the book read before the meeting. After we discuss the book, we'll be watching the movie Shrek, and then comparing and contrasting different viewpoints in fairy tales! The group is open to other interested kids from other grades and ages. Each month, we'll pick a different book to read and then get together to discuss it. By getting together like this, we foster a love of reading and expand on reading comprehension. This is intended to be a safe space and negative comments and actions will not be tolerated. The group is through the Soddy-Daisy Community Library and is hosted/administered by Kelly Flemings, Founder and Education/Outreach Coordinator.
