Collingswood Code Update May Mean Less Damage To Parked Cars

COLLINGSWOOD, NJ — Collingswood Borough Commissioners recently updated an ordinance that could translate to fewer cars parked along the street being damaged. The borough's ordinance on outdoor displays now states, among other things, that merchandise, goods and similar decorative objects can be placed "no more than 24 inches (perpendicular to the front edge) from the front of the building." Cassandra Duffey, Collingswood Borough Manager, explained the changes were made to address concerns that the borough "had a lot of businesses putting a lot of [things] in the public right-away and … causing issues with plows or cars opening their doors." Other language that is now included in the borough ordinance includes that borough businesses are required to have at least 4 feet of "safe, continuous unobstructed paths" on the public sidewalks and a "minimum unobscured distance of five feet from the street curb must be maintained from the curb." The borough hosts several events annually, including a May Fair and a Book Sale, that significantly increase the number of cars that need to find a place to park. Got a news tip? Story idea?
