CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — The mayor of Antioch is facing charges on suspicion of DUI, the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office confirmed.
Antioch Mayor Lamar Thorpe was charged April 1 with driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and driving with a .08 percent blood-alcohol content, the DA's Office said Friday in a news release.
The DA's Office said it received a referral March 23 from the California Highway Patrol about the offenses alleged to have taken place March 19 in Pleasant Hill.
After an evaluation, the decision was made to file the two misdemeanor charges against Thorpe, the DA's Office said.
The case has been submitted to the Superior Court of Contra Costa County and a notice to appear will be issued, the DA's Office said Friday.
Thorpe sent the following statement Friday evening to Patch:
"Under advice of counsel, I am limited in what I can share.
"As I stated previously, I am deeply sorry for this lapse in judgment, and I hope that the residents of Antioch can forgive me.
"Being your mayor is one of the greatest honors of my life, and I am sorry if I have embarrassed you in any way.
"You have my commitment that I will learn and grow from this moment and will continue to work diligently to make you proud."
