Man Shot, Injured In Millennium Park Exchange With Deputy: Police

CHICAGO, IL — A man was injured during an exchange of gunfire with an off-duty Cook County sheriff's deputy Friday evening at Millennium Park, nearly a week after a 16-year-old was shot and killed at The Bean, according to police. The shooting occurred during a period of enhanced security instituted at Millennium Park in response to last week's shooting. Around 7:22 p.m. Friday, police said a man refused to submit to a wand screening at an entrance to Millennium Park on East Monroe Street and jumped a fence. As security approached him, he fired his weapon, and an off-duty Cook County deputy working security returned fire, hitting the man, according to authorities. The man, who police believe is around 22 years old, fled but was soon arrested at the Chicago Riverwalk and taken to a hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. Charges are pending, police said. The off-duty deputy was also taken to an area hospital for observation. Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced earlier this week a rollback of a citywide weekend curfew to 10 p.m. for minors. She also announced unattended minors would be banned from Millennium Park after 6 p.m. between Thursday and Sunday. The measures took effect this week. This story is being updated.
