NEW YORK CITY — A drunken man shot a medic in an ambulance Wednesday night only to be captured by a retired cop when he tried to run away, according to police. The wild string of events began about 7:40 p.m. when Thomas McCauley, 37, was reported to be acting disorderly outside a Staten Island bar called the Funkey Monkey Lounge, police said. A Richmond University Medical Center crew soon arrived at Forest Avenue and Llewellyn Place and brought McCauley into their ambulance, said NYPD Inspector Mark Molinari. The ambulance was driving away when McCauley reached for a gun, police said. "The aided male brandished a firearm and fired one round from inside of the ambulance," Molinari said. "[It] struck the 25-year-old EMT in the shoulder." The driver pulled over near Forest and Bement avenues — about a mile from the bar — and McCauley jumped out of the ambulance and tried to run away, Molinari said. But a retired NYPD detective — and off-duty Sanitation department lieutenant — leapt into action and caught quickly caught McCauley, Molinari said. McCauley was arrested and cops found a .38 caliber revolver near the ambulance, Molinari said. The EMT was driven to Richmond University Medical Center by the ambulance driver and was listed in stable condition as of Wednesday night, police said. Charges are pending against McCauley, who was previously been the subject of an emotionally disturbed person call, Molinari said.
