Another balanced effort from a senior, junior, sophomore, and freshman added up to a 182-210 win for the Staples Girls' Golf Team at Longshore on May 18.
The top-ranked Wreckers did not let up while facing a St. Joe's squad that was not at full strength due to illness.
The big news of the contest was Sophomore Kathleen Coffey's eagle on the par-5 (white tees) third hole. This was the first eagle for Staples or any of its opponents in the 11 matches played thus far this season."I hit it about 250 off the tee, then had about a 140 shot to the pin and used an 8 which placed it about 6 feet from the hole. Then all it took was the easy putt," relayed Coffey when asked to replay the rare eagle.
Coffey's playing partner, junior Keeva Boyle, sank a 16-foot birdie putt on the same hole to card a 46.
Coffey ended up with a 45, Senior Co-Captain Leni Lemcke, who sits number two in the FCIAC individual rankings, shot a 43, and freshman Rachel Pontoriero finished the Wreckers with a 48.
Playing immediately after the varsity were the JV in a match against New Canaan. Although the Wreckers fell to the New Canaan Rams 238-222, solid rounds were played by juniors Ellery Vishno and Lila Botur, sophomores Isabel Pruchert and Erin Oldale, freshmen Aviva Ross and Kate Barnes.
Varsity hits the road Thursday to Silvermine Country Club to play Wilton. The next jv match is Monday at Darien.
