Salem, MA, May 20, 2022 – Salem Hospital, a member of Mass General Brigham, has appointed Alexy Kochowiec, MD, as the new Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He accepts the role after serving as Interim Chair of the department since January and as the Vice Chair since 2006. Dr. Kochowiec, a resident of Brookline, will head a wide range of women’s health services, including the hospital’s top-rated obstetrical service and Birthplace, its world-class, minimally invasive gynecology program, the Special Care Nursery and several specialty programs operated in partnership with Massachusetts General Hospital, including maternal-fetal medicine, and IVF/ reproductive medicine specialties. In his new role, Dr. Kochowiec will advance the work of Allyson Preston, MD, who stepped down as chair in January and developed an exceptional team of providers and staff over her 15 years of leadership. Dr. Kochowiec will focus on growing the OB/GYN service and deepening connections across Mass General Brigham to improve care for patients and families. In addition to his roles at Salem Hospital, Dr. Kochowiec will continue to partner with the Lynn Community Health Center (LCHC) and North Shore Community Health (NSCH) to provide outstanding women’s health services and patient care to underserved communities on the North Shore. As a practicing OB/GYN physician, he will continue to see patients at LCHC and deliver at the Salem Hospital Birthplace. Dr. Kochowiec earned his medical degree from Vanderbilt University and completed his residency at Brown University, Women and Infants’ Hospital. Previously, he was a clinical instructor of OB/GYN and Reproductive Biology at Harvard Medical School (2004-2012) and served as a member of the Massachusetts Medical Society’s Committee on Maternal and Perinatal Welfare (2008-2016). Dr. Kochowiec also has been a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology since 2004.
