NEWTON, MA — Baristas at the Waban Starbucks store unanimously voted to unionize Thursday, according to Boston Starbucks Workers United.
The store has become the seventh Starbucks location in Massachusetts to unionize, following the example of cafés in Brookline, Allston, Boston, and Watertown.
"Forming a union will help us advocate for ourselves and bring a sense of democracy to our workplace," the Waban Starbucks Workers United Organizing Committee said in a statement. "We hope to address issues of low wages, poor seniority pay, unpredictable hours, and understaffed shifts. We deserve a living wage and the right to have a voice in our workplace going forward."
"Congratulations to the Waban Starbucks in Ward 5 Newton MA for a unanimous victory for the union in the NLRB count today!" Newton City Councilor Bill Humphrey Tweeted.
