TRUMBULL, CT — Three Bridgeport teenagers are accused of robbing a Trumbull woman and stealing her car Thursday afternoon in the Westfield Trumbull shopping mall parking lot, according to police. In a news release, Police Lt. Brian Weir said the 59-year-old woman was loading her car in the mall parking lot when three young men surrounded her and demanded her car keys. The woman was pushed from behind and her purse was snatched from her hands, along with her keys, Weir said. The teens then entered her vehicle and sped off towards Main Street just before police arrived. (To sign up for Trumbull breaking news alerts and more, click here.) The woman was able to provide police with descriptions of the teens and her vehicle, which was then provided to other area police departments who assisted in the search, Weir said. The vehicle was spotted in Danbury a short time later, however the teens sped off when the they saw officers approaching, Weir said. Monroe police later spotted the car driving south on Main Street and followed it through heavy traffic back into Trumbull, where other officers were posted, Weir said. The teens tried to elude officers positioned at the intersection of Monroe Turnpike by speeding across the road, traveling south in the northbound lane of the divided highway for a short distance. The driver then lost control of the car, causing it to careen off the road and hit a signpost, Weir said. The teens then tried to escape on foot but were quickly caught by officers from Trumbull, Monroe and Bridgeport, Weir said. According to Weir, one 15-year-old and two 16-year-old juveniles were arrested and charged with first-degree larceny, third-degree robbery, robbery by carjacking, breach of peace and interfering with an officer. One of the 16-year-old suspects was also charged with reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle without a license, Weir said. All three juveniles were eventually released to the custody of their guardians on a promise to appear in Bridgeport Juvenile Court.
