Smashed Windshields, School Employee Reports Kidnapping Hoax: Police

VIENNA, VA — Vienna Police responded to a number of incidents over the past week, including an elementary school employee who received phone calls from a man who said he was going to kidnap her daughter and a series of smashed vehicle windshields. An employee of Cunningham Park Elementary School in Vienna contacted police on Monday about suspicious calls she received that day from a man who said he was with her daughter and was going to kidnap her unless the employee paid him. After receiving the calls, the school employee called her daughter and found out she was safe. The phone calls were determined to be a hoax, police said. The next day, Vienna Police received four reports from residents that their vehicle windshields had been smashed. Two of the smashed windshields were reported at 2:18 a.m. and 2:19 a.m. on Tuesday in the 300 block of Windover Avenue NW. The other two windshields were smashed nearby in the 300 block of Holmes Drive NW. Both of those smashed windshields were reported at 2:45 a.m. on Tuesday. In all cases, the vehicles were legally parked, police said. No suspects have been identified in the cases. On Wednesday afternoon, a registered sex offender was arrested at the Vienna Baptist Church on Marshall Road SW. A church employee told Vienna Police on Wednesday that a suspicious man was sitting in front of the church, near the playground and preschool. She said the same man had been seen there at the same time for several days. Police officers found the man and learned that he was a registered sex offender. The 71 year-old-man, who lives on Kingsley Road SW in Vienna, was arrested. He was taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center and charged with sex offender loitering within 100 feet of a child care program. Suspicious Event 22-004589Hunan Delight Restaurant276 Cedar Lane, SEMay 13 3:44 p.m.An employee reported that a man came into the restaurant, began yelling obscenities at the staff and customers, and was asked to leave. The man continued to linger outside of the restaurant. An officer spoke to the man who advised that he was upset because he was asked to leave the restaurant. The man left the area without further incident. Arrest – Driving While Intoxicated 22-004598Maple Avenue and Niblick Drive, SEMay 13 8:54 p.m.Officers responded to the area of Maple Avenue and Branch Road, SE for the report of a reckless driver. Sgt. Ruddy located the vehicle and observed the driver commit several traffic offenses. The officer initiated a traffic stop, and, upon her interaction with the driver, detected signs of impairment. After the driver failed to complete a series of field sobriety tests the officer attempted to place her under arrest when the driver began to resist. Sgt. Ruddy transported the 33-year-old woman from Market Street, East, Gaithersburg, Maryland to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where she provided a sample of her blood for analysis. The woman was charged with Driving While Intoxicated and Resisting Arrest and she was held on a $2000 unsecured bond. Trespassing 22-004668Cedar Lane School101 Cedar Lane, SWMay 16 9:24 a.m.A school administrator reported that a man came into the school's office on May 12, inquired about how to submit an employment application with them, and became disorderly with one of the employees. The following day, the man was observed walking around the school's property. On May 16, the man returned to the school again. Officers located the man as he was walking on Cedar Lane and, at the request of the school's administration, trespassed him from the school property. The man was advised that he would be charged with trespassing if he returned.
