Press release from Roanoke City Public Schools: 05/19/2022 Our strategic plan outlines current and future initiatives to accomplish school system goals. Current work includes a focus on authentic literacy, post-secondary success initiatives, and the adoption of an assessment system, entitled the (MAP), that provides parents and teachers with a true picture of students' academic growth in multiple subjects. This system is transparent and provides teachers with accurate and actionable evidence to target instruction for individual students. This system empowers teachers and parents with information to know how students are progressing toward meeting State standards, which also allows them to gauge students' progress in comparison to students across the nation and internationally. Additionally, as part of RCPS' legislative priorities, Superintendent White, the RCPS School Board, and division leaders advocated for Assessment Reform during the 2022 legislative session. Advocacy efforts encouraged elected officials to reform statewide assessments to utilize performance-based assessments over antiquated fixed response tests, such as the current Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments.
