Press release from the San Antonio Public Library:
Leslie Elsasser
17 May 2022
Paola Santiago is tired of her mother's stories about monsters and ghosts -- she's into science and facts instead. In Paola Santiago and the River of Tears by Tehlor Kay Mejia, 12-year-old Paola ignores her mother's warnings to avoid the Gila River and spends the summer sneaking around and meeting up with her friends Emma and Dante at that very river, which has been a site where kids have disappeared. When Emma goes missing and Paola and Dante investigate, Paola realizes her mother's stories may be more real that she ever thought.
