4 Students At Chatham High School Awarded Silver Key In Art Contest

CHATHAM, NJ — Four Chatham High School students received the Silver Key, the second-highest award, in the 2022 Regional Scholastic Art Awards during a virtual ceremony on May 14. Emma Batljan won in ceramics for her piece titled "Fixing;" Jasmine Lewin won in painting for her piece titled "Growing Pains;" Claire Zhou won in drawing & illustration for her piece titled "Afternoon in Quarantine;" and Marianna Zignon won in fashion for her piece titled "Control. Jasmine Lewin also received an honorable mention for two other pieces titled "Confined" and "In My Head" in Drawing & Illustration. Marianna Zingone also received honorable mention in Fashion for her piece titled "A New Spin on an Old Classic: My Fair Lady" and in Drawing & Illustration for "Eggs." Other Chatham High School students that received honorable mentions include Samantha Greenwood, Willy Chan, Annie Drouet, Amudha Krishnan and Yiru Zhou. "We are so proud of these dedicated individuals who clearly went the extra mile when making these art pieces. The accolades awarded to them are well deserved," CHS Art teachers Eric Hreha and Kiera Spadaro said. The annual Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, the nation's oldest and most prestigious program for creative teens in grades 7–12, announced that student participation is up 25 percent from 2021. More than 260,000 works of art and writing were submitted by teens from U.S. territories, Canada, and every state in the nation. For the past 99 years, the Awards have empowered and celebrated creative teens' voices. The Awards continue to champion and support teens' originality and creative prowess, as well as to strengthen their artistic and literary futures through opportunities for publication, exhibition and scholarships. Many notable artists and writers, including Andy Warhol, Tschabalala Self, Joyce Carol Oates, Kay WalkingStick, Charles White and Stephen King, received early recognition from the Awards. "Each year we are continually impressed by the level of creativity demonstrated by our nation's teens. Even more impressive are the individuality, vulnerability, sensitivity, and passion reflected in their work" Chris Wisniewski, Executive Director of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, said.
