ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY — Former Town of Hempstead Supervisor Laura Gillen has emerged from her 2019 loss to seek Kathleen Rice's congressional seat. The Democrat, who was her party's first to win as supervisor in more than a century, is among several candidates on the primary ballot for the 4th District. "Families are hurting. We've been through a really long road with COVID," Gillen, a guest on Friday's "Patch AM," said. The primary, initially set for June 28, was switched to August 23, but Gillen said that won't impact her campaign. "This has been a crazy race. We're getting new maps today, but I live in the heart of the district, so I'm not going anywhere," she said. "Whenever the primary is, I'll just run in the primary and then run in the general." In comparing herself to the Democratic challengers, Gillen said: "I'm the only one who's ever been elected by, basically, this district. The district is almost entirely the Town of Hempstead, with Long Beach thrown in." You can watch the full "Patch AM" Gillen interview below.
