Description

Kristin Gornstein presents female voices from the Baroque era to present-day, from Hildegard von Bingen to Jessie Montgomery. “I reverently consecrate this first work, which I, as a woman, all too ardently send forth into the light, the august name of Your Highness, so that under your oak of gold it may rest secure from the lightning bolts of slander prepared for it.” - Barbara Strozzi For centuries, female composers have toiled and languished in the shadows of the classical music world. Clara Schumann, one of the first world-renowned virtuoso pianists, gave up composing when she married her husband, the composer Robert Schumann. Rebecca Clarke was consistently passed over for international recognition in favor of less-talented men. Amy Beach curtailed her touring career to one charity concert per year when she married her husband (and resumed it in full force when he died). Kristin Gornstein has curated this concert of women voices from the Baroque era and the present-day, including Hildegard von Bingen, Barbara Strozzi, Francesca Caccini, Jessie Montgomery, Rene Orth, and Loren Loiacono. This concert is presented in-the-round at the high-tech and experimental B2 Center for Media, Arts, and Performance. Space is limited, so book your tickets early!
