Description
Celebrating Day 3 of #BlackBirdersWeek, #LearningToTakeFlight! This In-Person event is Open to Public. Join environmental educator Nicole Jackson (co-organizer, Black Birder's Week) and Joseph Dorrian (director, Ohio School of Falconry) to celebrate Black Birder's Week and learn about the important role that raptors (hawks, eagles, owls, and falcons) play in their ecosystems and Falconry’s key role in raptor conservation efforts. Tuesday's hashtag is #LearningToTakeFlight and will focus on sharing your first steps into birding on your own. When did you feel comfortable enough calling yourself a birder? Nicole Jackson (she/her) is a native of Cleveland, Ohio, Nicole graduated from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Education. A nature enthusiast, park advocate, and birder, she loves spending time outside and has a passion for getting people from underserved communities connected to the wonders of the natural world. Nicole currently works as a coach and environmental education consultant assisting in creating programs that educate youth and families on how to build a healthy relationship with nature. She is also board member of the Columbus Audubon and the founder of Black in National Parks Week. Joe Dorrian (director, Ohio School of Falconry) has had a passion for birds of prey, and the sport of falconry, since the age of 12, when he first read the book My Side of the Mountain. Now, a Master Class falconer (with over 15 years of experience working with hawks, owls and falcons), Joe served as Ohio’s first Apprentice Falconry Director for over 5 years before opening the Ohio School of Falconry (OSF) in 2014. Before starting OSF, Dorrian worked as an Sr. Organizational Development Consultant for companies such as Huntington Banks, the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation and OhioHealth. With each program that he facilitates, Dorrian strives to help individuals understand and appreciate, not only birds of prey and the sport of falconry, but also the important role that trust plays in the development of healthy working relationships, whether it be with humans… or hawks! Joe is married to his wife Kim and they have two children, Mason and Lainey.
