Description

June is National Men's Health Month. The month is dedicated to bring awareness about physical and mental health issues that affect men. National Men’s Health Month has been observed since 1994 during the month of June. The month is aimed at raising awareness of preventable health problems, early detection and treatment and encouraging men to take care of their physical and mental health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, men in the United States, on average, die 5 years earlier than women and die at higher rates from the three leading causes of death, heart disease, cancer, and unintentional injuries. Black men in the United States face higher rates of health disparities. They live 7 years less than men of any other racial groups. Black men also have higher death rates than Black women for all leading causes of death. They have a higher incidence and a higher rate of death from oral cancer, prostate cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and have a much higher risk of developing HIV/AIDS in their lifetime. Health Statistics: Health and Wellness Issues Affecting Black men: • 44% of Black men are considered overweight & 37.5% of Black Men are diagnosed with obesity • Higher incidence of diabetes and prostate cancer • Leading cause of death is heart disease followed by cancer • High suicide rate; it's the third leading cause of death between ages of 15-24 years old • 70% of Black men will experience severe depression in their lifetime. • 1 in 3 Black men are: > Less likely to receive guideline-consistent care after medical appointments > Less frequently included in research > More likely to use emergency rooms or primary care to address mental health concerns (rather than mental health specialists) It's time to create a platform in Nevada addressing health issues affecting men. Health, Wellness & Integrated Care in collaboration with Gentlemen's By Choice, BJ Williams of Can I Be Vulnerable and the City of Las Vegas will host a FREE weekend of awareness, education and fellowship focusing on Black men's mental and physical health. *Friday and Sunday events are optional* The conference will address 8-Dimensions of Wellness by providing awareness, education and community resources. "Every aspect of wellness can affect a person’s life. Working toward all of them in one way or another is a great goal, because wellness relates directly to the quality of a person’s life. That includes the emotional, physical, occupational, intellectual, financial, social, environmental, and spiritual parts. These dimensions are interconnected, one dimension building on another." SAMHSA, 2016 Join us on Friday, June 10th at 6pm for the Kick-Off Reception. Food, mingling, and networking! Registered participates can bring (1) guest to the Kick-Off Reception. This is optional but if you plan on attending and bringing a guest, please RSVP @ [email protected]. Join us on Sunday! Community wellness is another aspect of Environment Wellness. Feeling a sense of safety, connection and belonging to a community reduces stress and promotes overall wellness.
