Textiles expert Elena Kanagy-Loux shares the story of lace Although it may conjure up images of crocheted doilies and bridal veils, lace is an umbrella term for a family of openwork textiles with a vast, rich, and sometimes scandalous history. Join Elena Kanagy-Loux for an evening of highlights about the anonymous makers who painstakingly handcrafted lace, and the great lengths people went to to obtain this precious textile, which was once more valuable than jewels. Kanagy-Loux is the Collections Specialist at the Antonio Ratti Textile Center at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She is co-editor of volume 3 of the Bloomsbury Encyclopedia of World Textiles and is a co-founder of the Brooklyn Lace Guild, an organization dedicated to the preservation of lacemaking. She also teaches bobbin lace classes at the Textile Arts Center and makes lace of her own design. Lace fashion is highly encouraged! This is an in-person event. Your health and safety are our top priorities and we are following all CDC and New York City guidance. Proof of vaccination as well as a photo ID will be required. Masks are also required.
