This event focuses on models, program development, and skills needed to meet the needs of all learners. NCEA authors will lead sessions. Thank you Diocese of Joliet and Superintendent Dr. Boyle for hosting this event! Description: Exceptional learners is a term that has been used to describe students in need of additional supports to be successful in school. Catholic schools are called to be inclusive environments by way of mission. Recognizing that all God’s children deserve a Christ-centered education drives schools to include through programmatic structures, leveraging resources, and enhancing skills. This two-day workshop focuses on programs, skills, and models of academic inclusion will provide sessions and conversations to include specific high incidence disabilities, program development for students with low incidence disabilities and meeting the needs of gifted students. Participating as speakers and facilitators at this event will be five NCEA authors whose publications have provided depth and strength to the conversation around exceptional learners in Catholic schools. Dr. Janette Boazman (University of Dallas) will share myths about teaching gifted students and skills to best meet their needs. Dr. Michelle Lia (Andrew M. Greeley Center for Education at Loyola University, Chicago) will present on the science of reading and universal design for learning. Dr. Michael Boyle (Superintendent of Schools, Diocese of Joliet) will co-present with NCEA’s Colleen McCoy-Cejka as the event’s keynote address. Colleen McCoy-Cejka and Crystal Brooks (Inclusion Solutions, LLC) will provide an in-depth review of their Framework for Program Development. Participants will have the opportunity to enjoy large group and breakout sessions. Following a panel presentation on Models of Inclusion, participants will debrief through facilitated discussion. This intimate regional event will be capped at 120 participants. Attendees should expect to be able to: Identify elements of inclusive learning environmentsAssess the strengths and needs of academic inclusion in their own schoolsArticulate Catholic mission that drives inclusionUnderstand the benefits and limitations of various models of inclusionParticipate in networking with other educators and learn about inclusive practices in different school settingsUnderstand the social-emotional needs of gifted learnersDates/Times: June 15 - 1 to 5 PM CT June 16 - 9 AM to 3 PM (lunch provided) CT Price: $175 per attendee for NCEA members / $250 per attendee for non-members Cost does not include travel or hotel expenses.
