Description

Nationally known archaeologist and toolmaker Jack Cresson will demonstrate how to make a range of tools using local argillite stone. This is an opportunity to learn from an expert how American Indians made a wide variety of stone tools. Jack will chiefly be demonstrating how and why a particular type of stone (argillite) was used. Argillite can be found on the southern slopes of Sourland Mountain in the northern part of Hopewell Valley. A large number of artifacts in the Museum's collection are made from it. Because of limited space, free registration is required and limited to 25 people (9 years and older) just for this portion of the Museum's afternoon program. The entire program runs from 1pm to 4 pm and includes a display of some of our most interesting artifacts, and news of our artifact cataloging project. You are invited to bring any American Indian artifacts you may have. Our experts will be on hand to identify them!
