If your theory was correct that he'd have used a car, sword, or some other means to kill 10 people if a gun wasn't available, you'd see homicide by car, sword, and other means being pretty high in countries were guns are more restricted. As far as I know, there aren't a lot of people killed by cars and swords in other countries. Guns aren't the cause of the hate but they make it very easy to express the hate. Having a gun in your hand when others don't gives people a sense of power and that can be very attractive to people who feel powerless most of the time. I've seen my own father flash his gun at people when it was completely unnecessary. They weren't doing anything that harmed anyone or even anything illegal. He just didn't like what they were doing. He's very fortunate nothing happened and he could have been arrested just for flashing it without cause. I don't think it's realistic to think that guns are going away in America anytime soon. Too many already out there and too many people who need them for security blankets. I do think it's nuts that individuals can have AR-15s for "hunting". Hunting rifles are designed for hunting. Assault rifles are designed for use on humans.
