Man Charged With Identify Theft, Larceny: Darien Police

DARIEN, CT — A 24-year-old man was arrested last week after police said he stole credit card information from customers while working at a Verizon Wireless store in Darien. Joselito Rotger, of Watertown, CT, was arrested on a warrant on May 12 that charged him with third-degree identity theft, fourth-degree larceny, sixth-degree larceny and illegal use of a payment card. Rotger was released on a $25,000 bond. On Aug. 22, 2020, a victim reported to police that he went and bought a gift card at the Verizon Wireless store in Darien using his debit card. According to police, the victim said that the employee, later identified as Rotger, manually entered his card information and had taken "longer than normal" to do it. Shortly after, the victim noticed fraudulent charges on his debit card, with one of the purchases coming from an online flowers store. On Sept. 11, 2020, another victim reported to police that she went to the Verizon Wireless store in Darien to upgrade her iPhone. Police said the victim was told to write down her account ID and password in order to transfer data from her old phone to her new phone. The victim left the store during the process, and when she returned, the phone was being worked on by another employee, who was identified as Rotger, police said. Rotger asked the victim to log into her phone again because he was having trouble, police noted. The next day, the victim reported that she discovered five fraudulent Ebay orders totaling $1,124, police said. The victim also reported two fraudulent Venmo transactions. The phone numbers and shipping information used for the Ebay orders were traced back to Rotger, police said. Rotger is scheduled to appear in court on May 24.
