BALTIMORE, MD — Last week, 17-year-old Jasmine Brunson Jr. was having the "best night of his life" attending his junior prom at Carver Vocational-Technical School in Baltimore. Hours later, Brunson's life came to an abrupt and tragic end when he was fatally shot while attending a prom after-party.
The shooting happened around 3:30 a.m. at a home in the 1700 block of East Lafayette Street, the Baltimore Sun reported. Brunson died later at the hospital.
Officials haven't identified a suspect or released information on a possible motive, according to the Sun.
Now, Brunson's family and nearly 1,000 students at Carver are figuring out how to cope with the loss.
According to a GoFundMe page started by Brunson's family to help pay for funeral expenses, Brunson loved boxing and dedicated a lot of time to perfecting the skill. During the summer, he worked as a lifeguard at a local pool.
His aunt, Jessica Hair, wrote that Brunson had a "heart of gold" and "loved his family like no other."
Brunson's mother, Tiffany Hair, told WBAL-TV that her son was "a great kid."
"I want my son back," Tiffany Hair told WBAL-TV. "He went to school and went to boxing every day Monday through Friday. Saturday and Sunday he stayed in the boxing ring at Upton. He was a great kid."
Ronald Wallace, the 11th-grade administrator at Carver, told the Sun people just "gravitated" toward Brunson.
"Jasmine had goals he wanted to accomplish, and once he wanted to do something, he dove all the way in," Wallace said.
Baltimore Police homicide detectives have asked anyone with information about the shooting to contact them at 410-396-2100 or Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7Lockup.
