CHICAGO — A police officer shot and critically wounded an unarmed 13-year-old who ran after being stopped in a stolen car used in a carjacking, according to published reports. Around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, officers curbed a 2008 Honda that police say was used in a vehicular carjacking earlier this week in Oak Park. A masked man reportedly stole a car left running with a child inside near Lake Street and Oak Park Avenue. The stolen car was found with the child unharmed about 15 minutes later. After police curbed the Honda Wednesday night, a 13-year-old boy jumped out of the car and ran. An officer shot him. A source told the Sun-Times no shots were fired at police and no gun was found The boy was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, according to a Sun-Times report that cited law enforcement sources. Police issued a statement early Thursday morning that did not mention the boy's age, or what threat he posed to the officer who shot him. "As officers approached the vehicle, an offender fled on foot to the 800 block of N. Cicero, where an officer discharged his weapon, striking the offender," the statement said. Mayor Lori Lightfoot said in a statement that she is aware the unarmed boy has been shot and has talked to police Supt. David Brown and Civilian Office of Police Accountability administrator Andrea Kersten, and has confidence they'll work together to investigate. The officer who fired the shots has not been identified.
