Tucson's Prop 411 Sales Tax Extension Passes By Overwhelming Majority

TUCSON, AZ — Tucson's half-cent sales tax to fund street improvements is extended for another 10 years after voters overwhelmingly favored Proposition 411 in Tuesday's special election. In the all-mail special election, 52,844 voted in favor of extending the tax, while 19,149 voted against it, according to initial unofficial election results from the city of Tucson. Sales taxes in Tucson will remains the same following the election, since Proposition 411 simply extended the half-cent sales tax that voters approved in 2017, via Proposition 101. If voters had shot down the proposition, the rate would have decreased by a half-cent. Over the next 10 years, city estimates that it will collect an extra $710 million for street improvements through the half-cent sales tax. Tucson estimated that 85 percent of its neighborhood streets are in poor, very poor or failed condition.
