SMITHTOWN, NY — Pinky, a 2-year-old male domestic shorthair, was named the Smithtown Animal Shelter's Pet of the Week. Pinky went to the animal shelter from a home with several cats after his previous owner died. "Pinky got his name from his uniquely unpigmented nose," the shelter wrote in an email. "He is still learning to open up to people and come out of his shell, but he is showing that he can be very sweet and gentle-natured when he feels more comfortable. Pinky would do best in a quiet home with older children that will understand he needs time to warm up and feel safe." There are currently a variety of male and female cats & kittens available to adopt or foster. "If you are looking for a fun-loving, yarn tossing ball of love, stop by the Kitten Nursery or the Cat Condos at the Smithtown Animal Shelter and find a PURR-fect soulmate or two," the shelter stated. All of the felines at the shelter are current on vaccines and have received a full workup (blood work, Feline HIV & Leukemia tested, physical exam etc.) by a board-certified veterinarian. The Smithtown Animal Shelter has reopened, but due to the coronavirus, the shelter is continuing to practice social distancing in its facility, as well as indoor mask guidelines. Hours are currently Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays and Wednesday evenings are by appointment only. To inquire about the Pet of the Week or to meet your potential soulmate, please call the Smithtown Animal Shelter at 631-360-7575. The Smithtown Animal Shelter's primary concern is finding the perfect home for each animal that finds his/her way to it. The Animal Control Officers and kennel attendants at the Smithtown Animal Shelter will go out of their way to ensure both the rescued and rescuer are made for one another. If you have other pets, you can arrange to bring your four-legged family member into the shelter or they can set up an at-home meet & greet to see how your prospective new addition does with other family members, pets or the household itself. The shelter is also seeking foster volunteers. Foster parents provide temporary care for cats, kittens and dogs in their own homes. Some animals need as little as two weeks of care, while others may need care for an extended time. If interested, download the Foster Application here.
