WOODBRIDGE, VA — A Woodbridge man died in a vehicle crash on Opitz Boulevard on Tuesday afternoon, police said. Three other people were also injured. Authorities said the man, Mitchell Shaffer, was a passenger in one of the vehicles. He died at the scene, according to police. Investigators with the Prince William County Police Department responded to the scene at Opitz Boulevard and Telegraph Road around 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday. They determined that 2006 GMC Savanna was travelling westbound on Opitz Boulevard when it collided with a 2008 Ford E350 that was stopped at a red light. The force of the crash caused the Ford to hit another car that was stopped at the light, a 2012 Toyota Sienna, police said. The driver of the GMC Savanna, who police only identified as a 58-year-old Woodbridge man, was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, according to authorities. He was flown to an area hospital with serious injuries, but authorities said he is expected to survive. A passenger in the Savanna, who police later identified as Shaffer, died in the crash. The police department said he was not wearing a seatbelt when the vehicle crashed. The drivers of the Ford and the Toyota were taken to nearby hospitals, but their injuries were not considered life-threatening. The police department said speed was a factor in the crash and criminal charges are pending. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash can contact authorities at 703-792-7000.
