NEW LONDON, CT — Firefighters extinguished a second-alarm blaze at a large-scale transfer station early Wednesday morning. The fire department received the call at 3 a.m. and arrived at the Connecticut Waste Processing Materials LLC (CWPM) Transfer Station at 45 Fourth St. to find smoke showing, according to a statement. The transfer station includes rail access for the removal of construction debris delivered to the facility. The building is 26,000 square feet but the structure itself was not impacted by the fire. The fire department transmitted a second alarm at 3:32 a.m. and worked to extinguish a deep seated fire inside the transfer station. Workers from CWPM responded to the scene and used the facility's heavy machinery to access the fire and to remove debris from the area. Firefighters used large caliber hose streams and ladder pipes to apply water to the blaze. All on-duty New London Fire Department units responded, as well as the Waterford Fire Department, Submarine Base Fire Department, Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department, Groton Ambulance, L&M Hospital Paramedics and Veolia Water. No injuries were reported. The New London Fire Marshal's Office will be investigating the cause of the fire.
