Woman Intentionally Drove Into CT River: Middletown Police

MIDDLETOWN, CT — A woman was hospitalized after intentionally driving into the Connecticut River in Middletown on Monday, according to police. Police responded to the Harbor Driver area around 5:30 p.m. on reports of a woman driving a vehicle into the river at the south end of Harbor Park, officials said. Arriving officers saw a partially submerged vehicle with a woman trying to kick out the front windshield. Upon climbing out of the vehicle, the woman climbed onto the roof of the vehicle and was instructed to swim toward the Public Safety docks where "she climbed to safety," according to police. The woman suffered minor injuries as a result of kicking out the windshield and was later taken to Middlesex Hospital. "Officers have determined that the actions of the driver were intentional," police wrote in a news release. "The operator had previously been driving extremely erratically, eastbound on Route 66, just prior to this incident." Police said the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has been notified of the incident. The Middletown Police Dive Team is coordinating a dive operation in order to remove the vehicle from the water.
