MANCHESTER, CT — Manchester police Monday identified the driver killed in a fiery crash in town Sunday as a 24-year-old Shelton man. Though Diyar Muhammad Hamad was identified as the man killed, the cause and manner of his death, as well as the circumstances leading to the motor vehicle collision, remain under investigation, Manchester police said. The crash took place at 2:31 a.m. Sunday in the area near Center Street and Fairview Street. Police said responders encountered a single-car crash with a "heavily damaged vehicle on fire" that had hit the building at 600 Center St. The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames and the driver was trapped in the vehicle, Police said. Hamad was the lone occupant, police added. The fire was extinguished by the fire department and Hamad was pronounced dead at thescene, police said. A preliminary investigation showed that the car had been traveling east on Center Street where it veered left and off the road, and crashed first through a utility pole, then a fence and then into the wall of the building, police said. Speed appears to be a factor in the incident, police said. This incident is currently under investigation by the Manchester Police Department Traffic Unit and the Metro Traffic Services Crash Reconstruction Team. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has additional information can contact Officer Ashley Skolnik at 860-645-5560.
