Romeoville Police To Crack Down On Drivers Not Wearing Seat Belts

ROMEOVILLE, IL — Romeoville Police officers will be stepping up enforcement of making certain that area drivers are wearing their seatbelts just in time for traffic to pick up on area roads in advance of the Memorial Day holiday weekend. The annual Click It Or Ticket campaign began on Friday and will run through the end of this month, police officials said on Tuesday. The Click It Or Ticket campaign reminds area motorists to buckle up and focuses on safety education and saving lives. "Seat belts have proven to be one of the best ways to save your life in a crash," Romeoville Police Sgt. Brian McClellan said in a news release. "Unfortunately, many still don't buckle up. Worse yet, not wearing a seat belt is a habit that can be passed on to younger generations who follow the example set by their elders." Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, a popular time for traveling to visit family and friends, police said. Wearing a seat belt can reduce the risk of fatal injury by 45. Although Illinois currently has a 93.5 percent seat belt use compliance rate, unbelted occupants still account for more than half of those killed in motor vehicle crashes. The Click It or Ticket" campaign is administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation with federal highway safety funds.
