Oregon 2022 Congressional Primary Results: Hoyle Winning, Schrader Not

OREGON CITY, OR — Kurt Schrader may be on his way out. The longtime self-described "moderate Democrat" was losing in his primary race to challenger Jamie McLeod-Skinner. With nearly 45 percent of the vote counted, Schrader had about 40 percent of the vote compared to McLeod-Skinner's 59 percent of the vote. Schrader had engendered a lot of animus from other members of the party by taking increasingly conservative stands on issues important to the party. Most recently, he was the only Democrat in the House of Representatives to vote against an aid package. He said the reason was that he couldn't support a proposed raise in the minimum wage. On President Joe Biden's recent visit to Oregon, he endorsed Schrader. If the totals hold, McLeod-Skinner will face Happy Valley Mayor Lori Chavez-DeRemer who appeared to be coasting to victory in the Republican race. Meanwhile, Val Hoyle appeared to be on her way to victory in the race to win the Democratic nomination to replace Peter DeFazio who is stepping down. Hoyle was endorsed by DeFazio. With 99 percent of the vote counted, she had 66 percent of the vote counted. The nearest of the other seven challengers only had 15 percent of the vote. Hoyle will likely face Alek Skarlatos who ran uncontested. He is best known as one of the three members of the National Guard who stopped a terror attack on a train in Paris. Rep. Earl Blumenauer appeared headed to handily winning reelection in his primary. He will likely face Joanna Harbour who had no opponents for the Republican nomination. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici had 89 percent of the vote on her way to seek another term representing Beaverton. She will likely face Christopher Mann who appeared headed to victory in the Republican race. Cliff Bentz, the only Republican in the Oregon delegation, had 76 percent of the vote in his primary. He will likely face Democrat Joe Vetter. In Oregon's newly created 6th District, Republican Mike Ericson was leading with 33 percent of the vote while Andrea Salina was leading the Democrats with nearly 40 percent of the vote.
