Students in the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School's broadcasting course were invited to attend Stony Brook University's BASH (Broadcast Awards for Senior High). The students represented the school in multiple video categories and entered five videos into the competition. They brought home a second-place win in the Best Anchor Team category.
Students Lola Idir, Jenna Jacobs and Amy Whitman submitted the prize-winning piece.The collaborative high school class with technology teacher Brian Chalmers and English teacher Meg Lavin has grown and evolved since its inception a few years ago. The engagement of Port Jefferson students in real-world learning opportunities goes hand in hand with the BASH mission to support and foster growth among high school students and educators interested in broadcast journalism, video production, media and communications.
The annual BASH event celebrates student broadcast journalism and video production. Stony Brook University hosts the event, serving as part awards ceremony and part learning conference for Long Island high school students and teachers involved in high school journalism programs and media production classes.
