2022 August Primary: Candidate Filing Week Begins In Pierce County

PIERCE COUNTY, WA — Candidate filing week began Monday in Washington, opening up the door for those seeking regional, statewide and federal offices to get their paperwork in to appear on August primary ballots. This year, one of Washington's senators and four of its congressional representatives are up for election, along with the Secretary of State and a slew of legislative races on the state level. In Pierce County, specifically, the race will be on to replace current Pierce County Auditor Julie Anderson, who is stepping aside to run for Secretary of State. Pierce County Council's districts 1, 5, and 7 are also up for grabs, including the seat of current Council Chairman Derek Young. Young cannot run for re-election because of term limits, but several candidates have already filed to run for his seat. Longstanding Pierce County Prosecutor Mary Robnett will also be facing at least two challengers to retain her position. Candidates are encouraged to file online, which is possible around the clock until the filing window closes at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 20. Voters' pamphlet information will be due the week after on May 27, at 4:30 p.m. Pamphlets require a short biography, a statement, and a photo. Voters, meanwhile, can check to see who has already filed via the Secretary of State's office, and can check to see which offices are open through Pierce County's website.
