STAMFORD, CT — The opening reception for the Stamford Photography Club Member's Show, the grand finale to the SPC's 2021-22 season, will take place from 7-9 p.m. May 19 at the Palace Theater, 61 Atlantic St., in the heart of downtown Stamford. The show runs through June 24. The theme of the Member's show, the first since the pandemic started in spring of 2020, is the "The Power of the Picture." "One of things the COVID lockdown taught us was that art is essential. Art touches us emotionally and heals us, entertains and provides meaning and joy. Seeing it online is not the same as seeing it in person, so we are thrilled to be back at the Palace," said David Kaplan, president of the Stamford Photography Club and a Rowayton resident, in a news release. Stamford resident Sandy Gennrich curated the show. Her interest in photographing ethnic and bio-diversity has led her to explore many lands including Cambodia, India and Antarctica. Here in the U.S., she's passionate about using her camera to capture the unfamiliar within the American landscape—disappearing beauty, changing weather and unique perspectives. "We are inundated with images every day on our devices, on our TVs and in newspapers, but rarely do we really pause to digest those images. Still, imagery has the power to inspire awe, a smile or a move to action," Gennrich said in a news release. "It can create calmness, introspection or desire to travel. This collection of images from the Stamford Photography Club spans all those emotions. Hopefully each viewer will come away with a new respect for the everyday and the once-in-a-lifetime moment." Dr. Steven Labkoff, chair of the Exhibition Committee and a Stamford resident, said in a news release that the show represents the best the SPC has to offer. "It's been a challenge during COVID to keep focus, no pun intended, on ancillary activities like photography – but to some, the creativity that's made possible through photography is what helped many of our members get through the pandemic. It's heartening to finally be able to do an in-person show again," he said. The Stamford Photography Club was founded in 1945 by a small group of photography enthusiasts. The organization has grown to approximately 80 members and is a leading photography club in the area attracting members from Fairfield County in Connecticut, and Westchester County in New York. The club meets twice a month from September to June, alternating between its competitions and guest speaker series. For information on the Stamford Photography Club, visit their website.
