Description

MILFORD, CT — Firefighters rescued seven people and a dog who got trapped on Charles Island Sunday evening. The group walked to the island from the sandbar, but became trapped when the tide returned, according to Milford Professional Firefighters. No one was injured. The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection advises people not to walk on the sandbar when it is covered with water. The sandbar overwashes twice per day, which can produce dangerous currents and undertow. No crossing is allowed between May 1 and Sept. 9 when the island is managed as a natural area preserve for nesting birds.
