MIDDLETOWN, CT — One person was hospitalized after a car drove into the Connecticut River in Middletown on Monday, according to fire officials.
Fire crews, including the dive team, responded to reports of a vehicle in the water by the public safety dock, according to a post on the City of Middletown Professional Firefighters Local 1073 union's Facebook page.
"Great job tonight by the Middletown Fire Department working a car that drove into the Connecticut River," Middletown Fire Chief Jay Woron said in an update on Monday night. "Our first Engine Company got a visual on the car and one occupant that was in the water. Middletown Police Officers we're able to get a rescue throw device to the person in the water and pull them to our emergency services dock. The person was medically evaluated and transported to the hospital.
"Middletown Fire Department Marine 1 deployed and secured a line to the car. The Middletown Fire Department Dive Team deployed a diver. This diver was backed up two additional MFD divers and tenders. The diver checked the car and surrounding area and this check was negative. During dive operations the Portland Fire Department and South Fire District provided dive assets. South Fire Districts Marine Unit performed a surface sweep south of the incident to ensure no additional personnel were found."
Woron said the scene was turned over to the Middletown Police Department, and the Coast Guard and DEEP were also notified.
