CHATHAM, NJ — Two Chatham High School students, Willy Chan and Mihir Rao, have been named among the Governor's STEM Scholars — a program of the Research & Development Council of New Jersey. Chan and Rao are two of the 100 New Jersey high school and college students to complete the year-long program, which provides a complete view of New Jersey's STEM economy. The Governor's STEM Scholars 2022 class includes scholars from 20 different New Jersey counties. A public-private partnership among the Research & Development Council of New Jersey, the Governor's Office, New Jersey Department of Education, Secretary of Higher Education, and public and private research companies, the program provides high school, college, and graduate students with a comprehensive introduction to the state's STEM economy. Chan, a senior at Chatham High School has conducted research concerning low-cost electroencephalograms, robust computer vision and computational fluid dynamics enhanced by physics-informed neural networks. His research has received multiple awards from the North Jersey Regional Science Fair and the Thomas Edison Pitch Contest. In the summer of 2021, he received recognition from MIT's Lincoln Laboratory for his disruptive work in interactive machine learning and AI safety within self-driving ambulances. Rao, a senior at Chatham High School conducts research in the fields of computational biology and applied computer science. Rao's research has won him awards in various regional and national competitions and enabled him to be the lead author of a published research report. Rao is an Eagle Scout, an EMT on his town's emergency squad and the founder and CEO of a computer science education non-profit called Coding Cougars that provides free coding instruction to hundreds of students across New Jersey. As graduates of the Governor's STEM Scholars, Rao and Chan will have access to the Governor's STEM Scholars alumni network of nearly 600 students, which will enable them to stay connected to STEM jobs and opportunities within the state. Applications for the 2022-2023 Governor's STEM Scholars program are still open through June 10, 2022. For more information visit www.govstemscholars.com/apply/. Thank you for reading!
