WRIGHT COUNTY, MN — The trial for the man accused of fatally shooting a medical assistant and seriously injuring four others in February 2021 at a clinic in Buffalo took its first steps Monday, according to reports. Five jurors were seated Monday to serve in the trial for Gregory Ulrich, who was charged in October with one count of murder and four counts of attempted murder, KSTP reports. Ulrich, 68, of Buffalo, also faces 13 other charges, including using an explosive or incendiary device and carrying a firearm in a public place without a permit, KARE 11 reported. Ulrich's defense team asked a Wright County judge on Monday to dismiss a potential juror whose wife works in the healthcare industry and "is very distressed by the case," KARE 11's Lou Raguse reported. Jury selection could take up to two weeks, while four weeks have been reserved for Ulrich's trial, according to the report. Ulrich was charged in October, about eight months after the fatal shooting Feb. 9, 2021, at Allina Health's Buffalo Crossroads clinic. Wright County Attorney Brian Lutes convened a grand jury in early October after Ulrich was found to be competent to stand trial in August. Police said Ulrich walked into the Buffalo clinic on the morning of Feb. 9, 2021, and started shooting, killing 37-year-old medical assistant Lindsay Overbay and seriously injuring four others. He also set off two explosive devices in the clinic that morning before surrendering to officers, police said. A Wright County deputy said in February that "Ulrich's dependency on pain medication is the driving force behind his assault" at the clinic, the Associated Press reported.
