CHICAGO — A 7-year-old boy was grazed by a bullet after a gun went off Tuesday morning at a school in Chicago's Buena Park neighborhood, fire officials said. The boy was grazed in the abdomen after the gun went off around 11 a.m. at the Walt Disney Magnet School, which is located on Marine Drive, according to the Chicago Fire Department. NBC Chicago, citing a letter to parents from the school's principal, reported that the gun was in another student's backpack and "accidentally discharged." The boy was taken to Lurie Children's Hospital, where he was reported to be in good condition. In a letter to parents, Walt Disney Magnet School Principal Paul Riskus said police are handling the matter, NBC Chicago reported. "Our staff immediately intervened, secured the gun, and contacted the Chicago Police Department (CPD) and the CPS Office of Safety and Security," Riskus said in a statement issued after the incident Tuesday morning. "Thankfully, no one was seriously injured and everyone is safe. CPD responded to our school quickly and confiscated the gun. We are working closely with the CPS Office of Safety and Security to make a safety plan moving forward." The school principal said in the statement the school takes the situation "extremely seriously" and police are investigating.
