Still No Reopening Date For U.S. 60 West, Eastward Lanes Opened Sunday

TEMPE, AZ — Westbound U.S. 60 between Loop 101 and McClintock Drive remains closed after a water transmission line break on May 7 near the highway that spilled out an estimated 8 million gallons of water, flooding the road and the area around it. The eastbound lanes of U.S. 60 opened Sunday afternoon, after also being closed since the water line break. Significantly less damage was done to the eastbound lanes, according to the city. Left turns from the southbound McClintock Drive overpass to get onto U.S. 60 east were restored and the southbound McClintock curb lane was reopened. Left turns from northbound McClintock to head west on the highway are still closed. Restrictions on or near McClintock overpass are because of work happening on the water line repair, the city said. The city, along with Tempe police recommend avoiding the area, especially during rush hour. As of Sunday, about 34,000 square feet of damaged roadway on U.S. 60 westbound had been demolished and removed. There is not yet an estimated reopening date for the westbound lanes. And officials still have not determined what caused the 24-inch steel cylinder water transmission line near the highway to break. The cost of the repair work on the transmission line also has not been determined.
