Description
Join Dr. Lisa Doner for a discussion on community preparation and adaptation to a changing environment. The Wilmot Democratic Town Committee will host Lisa Doner, associate professor of environmental science and policy at Plymouth State University, for a discussion of how communities can prepare for and adapt to climate change. This nonpartisan event is free and open to the public. In her discussion, Professor Doner will explore ways that communities can increase their understanding of climate change and its potential impacts. With increased knowledge, communities can work together to prepare for change and develop hazard readiness plans. Professor Doner’s research focuses on how climate interacts with other mechanisms for change, ranging from natural disasters such as wildfires, floods, and landslides to human activities like agriculture, development and logging. Her primary professional objective is to investigate and explain natural phenomena and distinguish these effects from human-caused changes in Earth’s geologic systems. In her applied research with Plymouth State University’s Center for the Environment, Professor Doner conducts international studies of lake sediments to discern how watersheds change over time. Her research focuses on how climate interacts with other mechanisms for change, including natural catastrophe (fire, flood, landslide, tsunami), human disturbances (agriculture, logging, development) and long-term trends (glaciations, tectonics, sea-level change). These projects are globally distributed, with lake research sites in Utah, Maine, Baffin Island (Canada), Iceland and Turkey. In addition to her research, Professor Doner teaches classes in geoscience and climate change and serves as program coordinator for PSU’s Environmental Science and Policy Program undergraduate program. Professor Doner has a B.S. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and a B.A. in Geology from the University of Arizona, an M.S. in Quaternary Studies from the University of Maine, and a Ph.D. in Geology from the University of Colorado. The event is co-sponsored by the Dunbarton Democratic Town Committee. The WCA, a member supported, not-for-profit organization, offers free and low-cost events to the local community throughout the year. The association owns and operates two facilities in Wilmot – the Red Barn, a community center, and Timmy Patten Park, a beach and playground. Learn more at wilmotwca.org.
