Abington High School Mourns Loss Of Student Struck By Train

ABINGTON, MA — A teenager was killed over the weekend when she was struck by an MBTA commuter rail train in Abington, school and transit officials say. Katelyn McCarthy, 18, of Abington, was walking along the right of way on Birch Street crossing around 11:30 p.m. Friday when she was struck by the train. She was pronounced dead at the scene, transit police said before identifying her. "It is with the deepest regret that I need to inform you that last night a tragic accident resulted in the death of our Abington High School Senior, Katelyn McCarthy," Abington Superintendent Peter Schafer said in a letter to the school community Saturday. "Words cannot express our heartfelt sadness for all members of the Abington community during this difficult time. We are here to help our students and the community in any way possible." McCarthy's mother believes her daughter may have had earbuds in when she was struck, according to WCVB. Transit officials said the equipment at the crossing was functioning properly when she was hit, and foul play is not suspected. Crisis intervention teams were organized at Abington High School Saturday and Sunday for any students who needed help surrounding the loss of the soon-to-be graduating high school senior, Schafer said. Counselors will also be available to students all day Monday and for the next few weeks.
