NEW BERLIN, WI — The New Berlin Fire Department helped rescue a 56-year-old man from a pond at an apartment complex after his canoe flipped in the water at 12605 West Wyndridge Drive Friday afternoon, according to a news release from the agency.
Authorities were called out around 3:17 p.m. and discovered the man holding onto his overturned canoe in the middle of the pond, about 50 feet from shore and in 20 feet of water, according to the fire department news release.
Firefighters tried to help the man with a rescue disc to no avail, and eventually, a firefighter in a water rescue suit swam out to bring the man back to land, the news release said. He was brought to shore without incident and nobody was injured, the fire department said.
The man was not wearing a life jacket, and when his canoe overturned, he "had been doing something with the pond's fountain," the news release said.
The New Berlin Fire Department boat was placed into the water during the incident but it was not used for the rescue, the release said.
