Bunnell Baseball Beats Cross-Town Rival Stratford In Tight Contest

STRATFORD, CT — The Bunnell baseball team edged cross-town rival Stratford 3-2 in a non-league game Saturday morning at Penders Field. Bunnell starting pitcher Alex Binion was outstanding through six innings, keeping Stratford batters off balance throughout. He had a low pitch count, cleverly pitched to contact and had Stratford chasing many first pitches. Bunnell got on the board in the first inning when Carlo Maselli singled in leadoff hitter Luke Dawson, who also singled to start the contest. Bunnell's other two runs came in the top of the fifth when Dan Lombard came through with a clutch two-run single to increase the lead. Stratford mustered only two hits through six innings but came alive in the seventh with Brady Knorr doubling, Ben Petrie tripling, and Joe Booska singling. Following a sacrifice bunt and a walk to put the potential tying and winning runs on first and second for Stratford, Bunnell reliever Nathan Verkovad shut the door with a strikeout and a fly out to end the game.
