MOUNT VERNON, NY —Two Mount Vernon men were shot on South Second Avenue on Sunday night by an unknown gunman.
Shortly after 9 p.m., on Sunday, the Mount Vernon Police Department received reports of shots fired near South Second Avenue and East Third Street. When the first patrol officers arrived, they found a man, later identified as 32-year-old Antwaine Williams of Mount Vernon, suffering from a gunshot wound to the right upper leg. Williams was stabilized on scene and taken to Jacobi Medical Center.
Police were later alerted by staff at Montefiore Mount Vernon Hospital that a man, later identified as 36-year-old Ben Holmes, of Mount Vernon, had walked into the Emergency Room with a gunshot wound to the left foot.
Both victims are expected to fully recover.
Detectives from the Mount Vernon Police Department believe that Holmes and Williams were part of a larger group of men that had gathered on South Second Avenue and were playing dice. At some point, an unknown gunman approached this group and opened fire, striking the two men.
